Whereas a TENS unit is used for pain relief, the Microcurrent, because of its close proximity to our own body's current, is thought to work on a more cellular level to aid in the healing process. Microcurrent is a physical therapy modality providing electric current in millionths of an ampere. It has the ability to relieve pain, increase the rate of wound healing, increase protein synthesis, stimulate the regeneration of injured tissue, stimulate lymphatic flow, and relieve myofascial trigger points. Microcurrent also increases ATP production by 500% and has been shown to increase protein synthesis and amino acid transport. Microcurrent cannot be felt while it is being delivered because there is not enough current to stimulate the sensory receptors. Traditional electrotherapy units such as and deliver current in milliamps, which can cause muscle contraction and microcurrent cannot.
